Six people were arrested after Toronto police raided six sites over the weekend, confiscating an estimated $550,000 Canadian ($404,000) worth of allegedly pirated CDs and VHS tapes, as well as manufacturing equipment. The six were charged variously with copyright infringement, fraud, and offering to

sell infringing product.

"This is one of the biggest seizures we've ever had in Canada, and it is really the first seizure of a high volume of CD-Rs being burned as a high-volume commercial operation," says Brian Robertson, president of the Canadian Recording Industry Assn.

A lengthy investigation by the trade group over the past year had uncovered several flea market stalls in the Toronto area offering CD-R copies of sound recordings; the probe also uncovered links to the manufacturing and distribution operations.
