SMEJ Sees Annual Sales Dip

Sales at Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) (SMEJ) for the year ended March 31 fell 9.8% to ¥183.1 billion ($1.6 billion), reflecting the overall weakness of the Japanese market.

SMEJ has not released profit figures since it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Corp.

on Jan. 1, 2000.

The SMEJ group comprises 41 companies, including the namesake label, which is Japan's No. 1 record company. SMEJ had market share of 19% in this year's first quarter, according to SoundScan Japan.

Besides its labels, SMEJ comprises Sony Music Publishing (Japan), trademark and licensing company Global Rights, artist management firms, Sony Magazines, and music TV channel operator SME TV, among other holdings.
