AOL, XM Team For Web Radio Network
AOL and XM Satellite Radio are joining forces to create what they call the world's largest combined digital radio network.
The as-yet-unnamed online service will bring 70 XM channels and AOL's 130 channels free of charge to subscribers of AOL.com. A premium pay service will be made available to Web users who are not AOL members.
The offering, expected to roll out this summer with AOL's next-generation Web portal, could draw 100 million consumers online, the companies claim.
In addition, XM will integrate AOL programs Radio KOL, AOL Music Sessions and AOL Music Live into its satellite service. The companies will also work together to develop new programs and services for the Internet and satellite.
AOL chairman/CEO Jon Miller calls the deal "a giant step in digital media." XM president/CEO Hugh Panero adds, "Our philosophy has always been to work with strong partners at every level: retail, automotive, and now online to build awareness and subscriptions for XM."
To give consumers a taste of the new service, 20 XM stations and 130 AOL radio stations will be available free online in the coming months.
