UMI Buys Mobile Company

Universal Music International (UMI) has acquired 100% of Vivendi Universal Net for Mobile. UMI is buying Vivendi Universal Net's 50% stake in the company and rebranding it Universal Mobile. Details of the deal were not disclosed.

"Our decision to take 100% control

underlines our commitment to becoming a leader in the mobile telephone content-provider market and confirms our confidence in the Universal Mobile team," says UMI chairman/CEO Jorgen Larsen.

Established last year as a joint venture, Universal Mobile licenses recordings from VU companies and third parties to telecoms operators and provides other content services such as ring tones, band logos, anniversary dedications, and personalized voice-mail messages.

The company currently operates throughout Europe, supplying telecoms operators in such territories as France, Germany, the U.K., Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
