U.K. Cop Gets Suspended Sentence For Music Piracy

A former high-ranking British police officer found guilty last October of charges involving music piracy yesterday received a prison sentence of 16 months, suspended for two years (Bulletin, Oct. 15, 2002). John Stewart, 53, of Allerton Bywater, near Leeds, was convicted on two counts of conspiracy to

defraud the music and games industries.

David Martin, director of anti-piracy at the British Phonographic Industry, which in 1999 identified the first seizure of illegal CDs from Stewart, says he is "disappointed that Mr. Stewart has not gone directly to jail." Stewart had sold counterfeit CDs, mainly chart hits, at flea markets in Leeds and offered catalog lists so customers could place orders.
