Jazz saxophonist Bob Berg died Thursday in Amagansett, N.Y., when a cement truck collided with his vehicle. He was 51. Inclement weather was a major factor in the accident. Berg's wife, Arja, also suffered multiple injuries but is expected to recover.
A New York native, Berg studied at the Juilliard School before apprenticing in hard-bop bands led by Horace Silver and Cedar Walton. In 1984, he joined Miles Davis' band for a two-year stint. As a leader, Berg recorded dates for the GRP, Denon, and Concord labels, among others. He recently completed a new release for the Sirocco label that is expected in the spring.
