European digital distributor OD2 has struck a raft of deals with independent U.K.-based labels to coincide with the launch of the next generation of its subscription service. The new version allows users to burn tracks to CD.
The pact forged by the Assn. of Independent
Music (AIM) and Bristol-based OD2 adds the catalogs of V2, Mushroom, Ninja Tune, Skint, and Greensleeves to OD2's subscription service. Such acts as Fatboy Slim, Stereophonics, Underworld, Shaggy, and Garbage will now be incorporated into Version 2 of OD2's proprietary technology WebAudioNet. OD2 has existing repertoire deals with BMG, EMI, Warner Music, and others. The new service has gone live via OD2's European retail partners, which include MSN, Tiscali, Freeserve, and Ministry of Sound.
For a monthly fee of £4.99 ($7.60), users can stream, download, burn, and transfer a fixed number of tracks to portable devices. Subscribers can burn up to five tracks per month.
"We see Version 2 as a major milestone that will attract new consumers to legitimate digital music," says OD2 marketing director Ed Averdieck.
