Guitarist Michael Houser, a founding member of jam band Widespread Panic, died Saturday at his home in Athens, Ga., from complications related to pancreatic cancer. He was 40. Houser last month pulled out of the band's annual summer tour due to his illness.

Houser,

vocalist John Bell, and bassist Dave Schools founded Widespread Panic at the University of Georgia in the '80s. Soon after, drummer Todd Nance and percussionist Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz joined the group, followed in 1992 by keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann. The band--which has a faithful following for its tours--has released seven studio and three live albums, including this year's "Live in the Classic City" (Sanctuary).

At deadline, the fate of Widespread Panic's Seven Fiddlers Music Festival, scheduled for Aug. 17-18 in Greenwood Village, Colo., was unknown.
