Richard Cottrell has been named to the new role of global head of EMI Recorded Music's anti-piracy initiatives. Cottrell--who has been L.A.-based president of EMI Music Distribution in the U.S. since 1997--will begin shifting to the London-based role immediately. No successor at EMD has been named.

In his new role, Cottrell will have worldwide responsibility for EMI's fight against illegal distribution of music and will play a key role in defining the company's digital-distribution strategy. He will report to John Rose, executive VP of EMI Group and EMI Recorded Music.
