Two leading independent music-store coalitions are to offer an exclusive EP from Weezer, "The Lion & the Witch," which will feature songs licensed from Interscope and compiled by lead singer and guitarist Rivers Cuomo. The EP will be sold by indie-store members of the Music Monitor Network to promote
the band's album "Maladroit," according to Michael Kurtz, executive director of the coalition. Members of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores will also carry carry the EP.
It is not yet known what songs will appear on "The Lion & the Witch" or when it will be released. "The understanding is it will be B-sides," says Kurtz, "but we won't know what the final version contains until Rivers gives it to us, and we have been told he is working on it now."
Kurtz--who could not discuss pricing due to anti-trust laws--says the EP came about because Interscope gave the independent coalitions "the same kind of licensing opportunities previously afforded Target and Best Buy."
