Altnet, the secure file-swapping service that runs simultaneously with the popular KaZaA peer-to-peer network, hopes to begin charging for songs later this month. When KaZaA users search for a song, Altnet listings of promotional or commercial tracks encoded with Windows Media DRM appear atop the results
(Bulletin, May 20).
Thus far only a few secure tracks have been available from Altnet, including music from rap duo MaddWest and Palm Pictures' "1 Giant Leap" soundtrack. Altnet CEO Kevin Bermeister tells Bulletin that MaddWest--signed to EMI-distributed 2Ksounds--averages 50,000 downloads daily. He says labels will determine the amount of user-flexibility in a file. Tracks are expected to sell for 50 cents.
