George Clinton Sues Former Lawyer

Veteran funk artist George Clinton has filed a wide-reaching legal malpractice lawsuit against his former lawyer and law firm. The suit--filed last week in L.A. Superior Court--alleges that attorney Donald Wilson and his employer, the Law Offices of Johnnie L. Cochran, "failed to take reasonable and necessary steps" to safeguard Clinton's interests in four suits over ownership of his catalog and other possessions.

The suits involved disputes over songwriting and publishing rights between Clinton and business associate Armen Boladian. The new suit claims Wilson breached his fiduciary duty by failing to register "a forensic documents expert" who would have argued that Boladian materially altered contracts, resulting in Clinton's loss of a 180-acre farm, royalties, and the rights to his material through 1983.

"[Wilson] did everything wrong," says Clinton's lawyer Janet Conway, who is seeking damages in the "multi-million dollar" range. Attempts to reach Wilson were unsuccessful.
