Virgin Megastore France yesterday launched a music download service and is publicly requesting that major record companies license their catalogs for use on the operation.
The service--which offers downloads either individually or via various subscription pricing tiers-currently
carries content only from independent labels Wagram Music and Naive. On its Web site, Virgin France is making a public plea to the majors for content. "Major companies really love music. The proof, they are keeping it for themselves," reads a statement on the site, where users can sign a petition on the issue. Franck Badoux, deputy director of Virgin Stores, says the retailer is asking the majors "for access to the entirety of their catalog at non-competitive and non-discriminatory prices."
The download offering features digital services from Tornado Group plc.
