Bucking a global trend, the Australian recording industry in 2001 registered an 11% rise in shipments to 63.8 million units, according to the Australian Record Industry Assn. (ARIA). The value of shipments rose to A647.6 million ($336.7 million) from A$593.7 million ($308.7 million) in 2000. The ARIA

says the gains were "assisted by the reduced purchasing power of the Australian dollar, as this somewhat protected the local markets from imported product."

New releases were up by 11% in unit terms from last year, with strong sales by domestic acts Kylie Minogue, Powderfinger, Alex Lloyd, Kasey Chambers, Something For Kate, and Avalanches. Music DVDs and videos soared 65.4% to 954,800 units.

On the downside, ARIA notes that the local market continues to be hit by online and offline piracy and that sales of blank CDs outnumber those of prerecorded ones.
