New York Court Stops 321 Studios
Software company 321 Studios has been ordered by another court to stop selling products that directly aid consumers in making copies of DVDs.
Federal Judge Richard Owen in New York granted a preliminary injunction against 321 Studios today (March 3). In a case brought forth by Paramount Pictures Corporation and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, the ruling states that 321's "DVD X Copy" software violates the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).
A similar ruling was made Feb. 20 by Judge Susan Illston from the U.S. District Court of the northern district of California. In that case, 321 was ordered to stop distributing products with the "ripper" function -- which allow consumers to bypass DVD encyrption codes -- by Feb. 27.
The company has complied with the order, and continues to sell "DVD X Copy" without the rippers, which allows consumers to copy non-encyrpted CDs.
321 filed an appeal in the California case.
