A top Senate lawmaker says he will introduce legislation soon to authorize the creation of hundreds of low power FM (LPFM) stations across the country that proponents say could revolutionize the diversity of voices -- and music -- on radio.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz.,

chairman of the House Commerce Committee, congratulated the FCC for a policy turnaround in recommendations sent to McCain's office Feb. 20 okaying the new stations.

The radio industry has long opposed LPFMs, saying they would cause interference; proponents accuse the industry of trying to stifle new competition.
