Horrible licensing deal

By Caroline Horn
Publication: Bookseller
Date: Thursday, October 27 2005
The book series, created by Terry Deary, has achieved UK and Commonwealth sales of 10 million copies. The brand is now being extended to food, confectionery, stationery and toys by licensor Copyrights Group.
The first products were launched at the Brand Licensing show this week with

Portico, which produces cards and stationery.
Copyrights Group is also behind the launches of Wilson and Sharratt into licensed merchandise. The group initially licensed a range of products for Sainsbury’s called Best Friends, which was the brainchild of Tim Bugbird, then product developer for Sainsbury’s. Best Friends now comprises 70 products, including bags, accessories, stationery, clothing and toys. Copyrights has just launched a second range based on Jacqueline Wilson’s Totally Tracy! titles.
Meanwhile, Top That Publishing has launched a new range of Roald Dahl and Jacqueline Wilson licensed products in the run-up to Christmas.
Bugbird, who recently joined Top That as business development manager, will be responsible for developing licensed and own brand products for Top That customers including Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, Next, W H Smith and the AA’s Patrolman Pete character.
