HarperCollins US has restructured its sales force, with the loss of almost 20% of its staff. The move is being seen as the final stage in the consolidation of its recent acquisitions Avon and William Morrow.

The new sales department will be split into five divisions, with the heads of each group accountable to Therese Burke, president of general book sales.

Announcing the restructure, HC chief executive Jane Friedman said the company wanted to make the changes as quickly as possible for the sake of its employees and its productivity. "I think that whenever you have consolidation of this kind there are very difficult decisions to be made, and we've made them."
