Barnes & Noble has acquired a 49% stake in on-demand publisher iUniverse.com. The deal could place B&N at the head of the pack in on-demand publishing, while making available author's titles listed on the iUniverse Website through 500 B&N superstores.

iUniverse.com offers editorial and digital publishing services to new writers and authors of out-of-print books. It maintains a list on its Website of titles that can be printed to order, including single copies. The orders are fulfilled by Ingrams' Lightning Print on-demand service.

Details of the deal have not been disclosed, but both sides said it would result in iUniverse authors and titles being promoted in B&N stores and through the retailer's Internet site, Barnesandnoble.com.

B&N's move into on-demand publishing comes four months after rival Borders bought a 20% stake in print-on-demand specialist Sprout Inc.
