Virgin/Our Price company history

1970 Richard Branson founds Virgin as a mail order record retailer.

1971 Tape Revolution, Virgin's first retail outlet, opens in London's Finchley Road, selling music cassettes.

First Virgin record store opens in London's Oxford Street.


1976 Tape Revolution trading name changes to Our Price Records.

1986 Our Price accepts a £43 million offer to become an autonomous subsidiary of W H Smith.

Virgin Group floats on the Stock Exchange and 35% of its ordinary equity goes to 87,000 investors.

1992 W H Smith purchases a 50% stake in Virgin Retail.

1994 Our Price and Virgin merge in a new joint venture.

1998 Virgin Entertainment Group completes the unconditional acquisition of Virgin Our Price from W H Smith. VOP reorganises into two constituent businesses, Virgin Retail and Our Price (which is currently going through a management buyout).
