Berg buyout partners look for growth

Two executive directors of Oxford-based academic publisher Berg Publishers have led a private investor-backed management buy out of the company.

Kathryn Earle, m.d., and Sara Everett, director, bought the publisher after doubling its annual turnover to reach £750,000

since they took charge in 1997. Berg specialises in academic books on anthropology, history, fashion and cultural studies, with 50 new books a year and a total of 400 titles in print.

It publishes the journal Fashion Theory, plans to launch Textile in 2003, and has a third journal planned for 2004. It aims to publish 15 journals by 2007, with the total staff of nine expected to increase to 15.

Ms Earle said the m.b.o. would give extra capital for investment over the next five years. "We plan to continue expanding the areas that have grown recently, especially sports, textiles and fashion."

Berg's market is primarily students. In the UK, 80% of sales are made through the traditional book trade, while in the US titles have been adopted on state reading lists.

The company's growth since 1997 has been driven by expanding sales in the US, where it is distributed by New York University Press.
