Book vending venture folds after two years

Book.stop, the company that sold books from vending machines, has closed down after less than two years in business.

Phil Rattray, Book.stop managing director, said that sales had been higher than expected but fresh funding had not been secured for further growth.

"It is a great shame that after the many hurdles the business has had to overcome we are unable to continue further. Four years of development have been invested in this idea and after the many technological advances we have made it is very disappointing to stop now."

Book.stop placed vending machines in airport lounges, hospitals and hotels. Customers could choose from 30 bestselling paperbacks and pay by credit card.

The Bookseller's article marking the company launch in November 2001 generated a vast number of responses from parties interested in hosting machines or vending their titles. The company would not say how many Book.stop machines were currently deployed.
