Random eyes Warner

Bertelsmann's mooted acquisition of the AOL Time Warner books group would strengthen its postion as number one in UK consumer publishing.

Random House Inc pulled out of the bidding earlier this year on speculation that the $400m price was too high. But it is said to

have rejoined talks after Bertelsmann raised £1.4bn and AOL dropped its price.

With Time Warner, Bertlesmann would have had a 15.6% share of the UK Nielsen BookScan TCM in 2002. Penguin had 10.6%. Stuart Applebaum of RH Inc said AOLTW was "attractive, with a strong line up of books". But he added: "That is not an endorsement of any acquisition intention."
