Dorling Kindersley is aiming to extend its content to new audiences with the launch of a magazine for seven to 11-year-olds this autumn.
The monthly magazine, DK Find Out, will use the publisher's vast text and picture archives to create factual features alongside original
content. It has been developed in association with Tree Top Media, the children's media company founded by Gillian Laskier, co-founder and former head of the children's magazine business at BBC Worldwide.
Miriam Farbey, children's category publisher at DK, said the magazine would push the company's material to new markets. "It will be reaching children who don't go to bookshops—we see it as a different but complementary channel."
She stressed that the magazine would not aggressively promote DK titles to children. "It's not a vehicle for our books—it's a whole new format," she said. The recognisable layout of DK's material will be adapted to suit the magazine format. "It's still DK, but with a magazine twist," said Ms Farbey.
Ms Laskier, c.e.o. of Tree Top Media, said DK's material would fill a gap in the magazine market for factual titles. "There's nothing like it out there for children at the moment."
