OFT clears Sweet & Maxwell on Lawtel

The Office of Fair Trading has cleared the takeover of online legal service Lawtel by Sweet & Maxwell, the Thomson-owned UK law publisher.

The merger was estimated to have given S&M a 25% share of the UK market for law online, making it second only to Reed Elsevier LexisNexis. The S&M portfolio now comprises Westlaw, New Law Online, Local Law UK, Consult Gee and Lawtel.

LexisNexis has purchased Anderson Publishing Company, the Cincinnati-based law publisher, for $21m (£13m). Anderson will become a subsidiary of Matthew Bender & Co, part of the LexisNexis group.
