Fixed pricing legislation for books finally arrived in Italy when a bill introduced in 2000 by Minister for Culture Giovanna Melandri became law last month.

The new law is based on legislation first introduced in 1981, but never properly enforced. Article 11 states

that all books on sale in Italy must carry a fixed price set either by the publisher or the importer. Booksellers may sell trade books with a discount of up to 10% (5% for textbooks).

Both Italian trade organisations —Associazione Italiana Editori (AIE) and Associazione Librai Italiana (ALI)—welcomed the law. An AIE spokesman called the new legislation an important step to stabilise the Italian publishing industry.
