Following the takeover of Jäggi, the second-largest Swiss bookseller with annual sales of DM57m (£17.2m), German bookselling group Phönix has acquired its second Swiss bookseller, Hanns Stauffacher AG (Bern).
Terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Stauffacher operates
six bookshops in and around Bern. Its flagship shop trades from 33,000 sq ft in a prime location of the city, making it the largest specialist bookshop in the country.
The company reported sales of DM44m (£13.9m) in 1999, making it the third-largest bookseller in Switzerland behind market leaders Orell Füssli and Jäggi.
Phönix bought Jäggi shortly before Christmas. It was the company's first acquisition outside Germany. This latest deal for Germany's second biggest bookseller has made it the undisputed market leader in Switzerland, with combined sales of DM101m (£31.1m) compared to Orell Füssli's DM77.1m (£24.1m).
The Stauffacher deal was finalised by Ferdinand Braun. He has been the main force behind the chain's expansion since he joined Phönix two years ago as joint managing director with responsibilities for sales, marketing and buying.
But Mr Braun's days at Phönix are numbered. He is leaving the company on 1st April to take up a senior management post at Bertelsmann's book club operation.
