Barrington Stoke, publisher of books for reluctant readers, is to launch a new list for eight to 13 year olds who have a reading age of about six years.
The company now distributes in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa and saw keen interest from European publishers
at Bologna.
"Europeans are behind literacy initiatives in a big way," Lucy Juckes, director, said. "We have sold titles in translation to the Danes and French, and the Germans are also interested in short 'gem' stories written by well known authors."
The company saw increasing interest from areas such as Singapore, Japan and Hong Kong, where its titles—which have a maximum of 6,000 words—can be used to teach English as a second language.
A new Website, www.barringtonstoke.co.uk, has been launched. If the forthcoming list is successful, the company will extend it to produce titles for teenagers with a younger reading age.
