'Books are best', Publishers Association claims

Books are more effective than Information Communication Technology at raising pupils' exam performances, according to research commissioned by the Publishers Association.

In a survey of 800 primary schools across the UK, Roger Watson of Statistics for Education found that the correlation between book resources and good Key Stage 2 results was almost twice as strong as that between ICT spending and good Key Stage 2 results.

Current spending on books by schools stands at more than £200m, compared to about £30m on educational software.

John Davies, director of the Educational Publishers Association, told The Bookseller that the research provided a riposte to the view that ICT would replace books in schools. "The current plans tend to be unrealistic in their assumption that everyone will switch over to using electronic materials. Electronic software is at quite an early stage, but we don't believe it will ever supplant books."
