However, a few days later I bought exactly the same titles in the same promotion in W H Smith’s Stratford-upon-Avon shop without a word being said. So, was this a case of poor management in Maidenhead or a lack of understanding in Stratford?

for an average paperback is way over the top--it would be nice to understand the promotion before confrontation at the till.
