Two-horse race in Switzerland

Rapid consolidation in the Swiss bookselling market has sparked a fierce two-horse race between the leading German book chain Phönix and Swiss bookseller Orell Füssli.

The acquisitions of Jäggi and Hanns Stauffacher earlier this year saw Phönix become the largest specialist

bookseller in the country. But Orell Füssli has regained market leadership by acquiring two smaller competitors, Krauthammer and Raeber Bücher.

Orell now has a narrow lead over Phönix, with combined sales of DM105.5m (£33.9m) compared to Phönix's DM104.8m (£33.6m).
