50 Borders positions at risk

Following a review by chief executive David Roche, Borders has divided its estate into five store types, each with management suited to turnover, size and location. The chain aims to have more booksellers on the shop floor for assistance and handselling, and also wants a higher proportion of part-time

employees. The new structure will be in place from 7th August.
Roche told The Bookseller: "It is a strategic move to be more flexible. Though 50 positions are at risk, some will be redeployed, and there will be 100 people brought in, with a net increase of 50 booksellers." He said that at head office, "fewer than half a dozen" roles across the business will be affected.
