But Brown’s sales, combined with impressive tallies by Sharon Osbourne’s Extreme paperback (Time Warner) and Jilly Cooper’s Wicked! (Bantam Press), were not enough to drive the market as a whole to growth.

The number of books sold in the seven-day period was 1.2% up

on the corresponding week in 2005, but discounting pushed revenue slightly down to just under £24m.
