Obituaries go to Graveyard

Obituaries of leading book trade figures are to be published in book form. The venture is being launched by Ian Norrie, former owner of the High Hill Bookshop, and David Whitaker, former chairman of J Whitaker. It will also collect "facts and anecdotes" about subjects in advance of their deaths.

The Graveyard Press plans to publish its first volume of about 40 obituaries in late 2002 or early 2003. Subjects for "amended and extended 'warts and all' assessments" will include William Heinemann, Frederick Macmillan and André Deutsch.

Mr Norrie said the volumes would be of interest to trade historians, students and biographers, and would form "a potted history of the book trade in Britain".

The project will be supported by Paul Richardson, director of the School of Art, Publishing and Music at Oxford Brookes University. Students at the centre will aid in research and production.
