Richard Knowles, commercial director at library supplier Cypher, has opened his own bookshop in Horbury, near Wakefield, West Yorkshire. He will remain in his role in marketing and customer relations at Cypher on a part-time basis.
Rickaro Books—the physical incarnation
of an earlier Internet-based antiquarian venture—will be the "first bookshop in living memory" in Horbury. It will compete for trade with branches of Ottakar's in nearby Wakefield and Waterstone's and Borders in Leeds.
The shop will deal exclusively with Bertrams—part of the Cypher Group—as wholesalers. "The service has been very good so far," Mr Knowles said.
Mr Knowles aims to put his experience of the book trade to good use. The shop will stock a mix of new titles, second-hand and antiquarian books, with an emphasis on children's titles.
Mr Knowles told The Bookseller: "It's something I've always wanted to do. I will be striving to make it a community bookseller, working hard at marketing and customer relations. We've got something here for everyone."
