W&N takes salmon fishing to the Yemen

By Joel Rickett
Publication: Bookseller
Date: Friday, December 16 2005
Torday, 59, previously worked in the fishing industry and in the Middle East. His book’s hero is a scientist who becomes embroiled in a political scheme to bring salmon fishing to the Yemen. He also finds late-blooming love. It is told partly in the form of memos, diaries and emails.

Helen Garnons-Williams, publishing director of W&N, said: "It is like a cross between ’Yes, Prime Minister’ and ’The Constant Gardener’ with a touch of A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian. It is funny, moving and original."
W&N publishes in spring 2007 and expects to sell US rights soon. Torday’s agent is Mark Stanton of Jenny Brown Associates in Edinburgh.
