Reading Tree gets 'Magic Key' to BBC

The Reading Tree, Oxford University Press' reading scheme for primary school pupils, is to receive a massive boost through television, magazines and books thanks to a deal with the BBC.

The scheme is to be adapted for a BBC television series to be screened in the autumn.

HIT entertainment, which is producing the fully animated series, called "The Magic Key", is half way through scripting the first 26 episodes. It is working closely with author Roderick Hunt and illustrator Alex Brychta.

The series, based on the main characters in The Reading Tree books, will have entirely new storylines to fit in with the guidelines for the government's National Literacy Strategy. Each programme will tackle a different modular subject, ranging from punctuation to pronunciation. The first will appear on the BBC Schools service in September.

OUP is planning to produce tie-in books using the stories from the programme. BBC Worldwide will also be publishing novelty books and magazines to tie in with the scheme.
