LA in primary push

The Library Association is supporting school libraries with a new brochure, Primary School Library Guidelines. Some 37,000 copies of the guidelines will be sent to primary schools over the summer.

Jonathan Douglas of the LA said: "Schools have been given an enormous

amount of resources to support the National Literacy Strategy. What we are aiming to do with this leaflet is to encourage wider reading outside the national strategy."

He added: "We hope that this will provide a useful management tool. It gives guidelines on the building blocks of how to build and manage a school library. What we would like, eventually, is for libraries to become compulsory in primary schools."
