The Cape Town Book Fair will run from 17th to 20th June 2006 in the Cape Town International Convention Centre. At the signing of the agreement Volker Neumann, director of the Frankfurt Book Fair, reiterated Frankfurt’s commitment to what he said would be a major annual world publishing event.
The Cape Town Book Fair will include a strong rights trading component. It will also have a public focus, with a book festival and a range of cultural events accompanying the fair.
Steve Connelly, m.d. of Struik Publishers, said: "The expertise and support of Frankfurt has been the final decisive factor that has allowed us to make the dream of a Cape Town Book fair a reality. We look forward to welcoming the international publishing community to the beautiful city of Cape Town."
Jeremy Boraine, publisher at Penguin and chair of the PASA Trade Council, said that the fair would be a wonderful opportunity to expand the book market in South Africa and showcase local talent to a wider market.
"This will be South Africa’s World Cup of publishing," said Lindelwe Mabandla, chair of PASA, "and we are ready to kick off on 17th June 2006." The football World Cup will be held in South Africa in 2010.
