The SFO would not reveal details of the alleged £1m-plus fraud, but the SFO only takes on cases if the suspected fraud is major and complicated. Sweet & Maxwell said it was co-operating fully with the investigation. A statement said: "Details of the allegation have not been made known to Sweet &

Maxwell but the company believes it concerns certain subscription-related customer refunds. This is an issue the company had been addressing."

Sweet & Maxwell publishes texts on legal and regulatory issues including the Financial Services Authority’s online handbook and books relating to commercial fraud. Based in London, it employs around 700 staff. It is part of the Thomson Corporation, whose legal and regulatory division including Sweet & Maxwell saw revenues of $3.1bn (£1.65bn) in 2003, up from $3bn (£1.59bn) in 2002.
