Better terms not the answer

To help independents survive in the longer term, publishers could easily, I would have thought, add money-off vouchers in the back of those new titles, to be redeemed on backlist in specialist outlets only for a limited period--on titles supermarkets would not stock anyway. Independents (or bookselling

chains) could then claim the money back through their publisher account or their wholesaler of choice.
We need imaginative ideas that enable publishers to operate as businesses, yet capture and retain new readers in order to halt the decline of backlist sales and, more pertinently, of the specialist outlets that support publishing diversity.
