Humorist and author Art Buchwald died on Wednesday in his Washington home at age 81. Last year, Buchwald, longtime columnist in the Washington Post, which earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1982 and 1986, moved to a hospice after refusing dialysis for his failing kidneys. He wrote the book Too Soon to Say Goodbye

, which was published in November, about his experiences.

"The last year he had the opportunity for a victory lap and I think he was really grateful for it," said Joel Buchwald, his son, according to the Associated Press. "He had an opportunity to write his book about his experience and he went out the way he wanted to go, on his own terms."
