Abebooks Joins With LibraryThing.com

Online retailer Abebooks.com has acquired a major stake in social networking site LibraryThing.com. Different from social networking sites, LibraryThing.com gives booklovers a way to catalog their own libraries online and a network focused on books.

The site was launched in August 2005 by Tim Spalding and already has more than 35,000 members with more than 2.7 million books catalogued. Abebooks has purchased a 40 percent stake in the website. This deal follows two recent acquisitions by Abebooks: price comparison website BookFinder.com in November and book inventory and order management company FillZ in February.

"Like Abebooks, LibraryThing is dedicated to booklovers," said Hannes Blum, CEO and president of Abebooks. "The most exciting part of this deal is the unique information LibraryThing generates about books and book-buying habits. This data will help people find and buy more books on our site, and we're going to help LibraryThing by exposing the website to millions of Abebooks customers."

By accessing book information from databases like Amazon.com and the Library of Congress, users can then describe and review books in their collections or browse through fellow users pages to see what books they recommend. The site also links to several online retailers, including Abebooks, Alibris and Amazon, where users can purchase more books to add to their collections.

"By working with Abebooks.com, we will have access to resources, expertise and marketing to enrich LibraryThing and make it more popular than ever," Spalding said in a release this week. "LibraryThing and Abebooks appeal to the same people?dedicated booklovers?so this partnership is going to be very productive for both of us."
