When James Frey signed a contract with Riverhead for two fiction books in early January, he didn't know that Oprah Winfrey would soon strip away his status as literary darling. But she did, and thanks to the
controversy
over the fabrications and embellishments in his 2003 now-debunked rehab memoir,
A Million Little Pieces, his publisher has sent him packing.
Today, Frey's representative, Lisa Kussell, confirmed Page Six's exclusive report about the breakup. She told Reuters, "All I can say is he no longer has a deal with them."
The film adaptation of
A Million Little Pieces, which has been in development since Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston bought the rights in May 2003 under their (now solely his and Brad Grey's) Plan B shingle, is also being reevaluated, the
L.A. Times reported.
Even with the fallout from Winfrey's televised flogging of the author and his publisher, though,
A Million Little Pieces continues to sell well, landing at No. 7 on The Book Standard's
Overall Chart after selling 25,000 units last week.
