Donald Trump filed a lawsuit yesterday against Warner Books and author Timothy L. O'Brien over the
New York Times reporter's
TrumpNation: The Art of Being the Donald, published last October. In a press release issued today, Trump claims the book makes false and malicious statements about
him, his family, business deals he's made and his net worth.
Trump, who filed the suit in Camden, N.J., is seeking a total of $5 billion: $2.5 billion in compensatory damages and $2.5 billion in punitive damages.
Among O'Brien's points in the book is that Trump is not a billionaire, as the real-estate titan regularly refers to himself, but rather worth no more than $250 million.
"Rather than sitting back and letting false statements be published without challenge, I believe it is important to expose irresponsible, malicious and false reporting," Trump said. "The writer and publisher of this book knew full well that their statements were false and malicious, but in hopes of generating book sales, they did not care."
According to Nielsen BookScan, the book has sold nearly 6,000 units since it was published in October.
A reviewer for Kirkus last August noted, "It is surprising that
[Trump] appears to have cooperated with the author, despite having declared O'Brien a 'whack job' to the press."
In fact, in a release issued today by Warner, a company spokesperson said, "Mr. O'Brien welcomes the opportunity to meet with Mr. Trump personally at any time and in any forum to discuss the merits of
TrumpNation, a book in which Mr. Trump participated in extensively and willingly."
