ierra Club Outings: Celebrating 100 Years of Exploring, Enjoying and Protecting the Planet.

More than 100 years ago, environmentalist John Muir climbed a Sierra Nevada peak and was awed by the beauty before him. He dreamed of preserving

wild places for future generations, and out of this dream the Sierra Club was born.

Muir recognized the power of bringing people into the wilderness as a way of inspiring them to preserve it. And since 1901, Club-trained volunteers have led members up mountain peaks, down rushing rivers, through pristine rain forests and under the seven seas.

In 2001, the Sierra Club Outings Program will celebrate 100 years of helping members explore and enjoy what they work so hard to protect. Each year thousands of outdoor adventurers sign up for Outings trips throughout North America and around the world. Sierra magazine is commemorating the 100th anniversary of Outings by offering schedule advertisers a number of exciting partnership opportunities.

Throughout the year, Sierra will recognize the vital contribution that Outings trip leaders have made to responsible wilderness adventure and the growth of the outdoor industry. In spring 2001, they will receive an Outings Trip Leader Recognition Gift Pack that will include a special letter of commendation, along with products from participating manufacturers. Logos of Gift Pack product donors will be included in a appreciation ad in the November/December 2001 issue, and donor companies will be showcased at the summer 2001 Outdoor Retailer show.

Trip participants and other outdoor consumers consistently rely on Outings leaders for recommendations about their next destination, or their next outdoor gear purchase. The Gift Pack gives advertisers a unique opportunity to reach this core group of respected outdoor authorities.

The May/June 2001 issue of Sierra will revisit an age that predates polypro and permits. "100 Years of Sierra Club Outings" will highlight a string of mountaineering and outdoor "firsts" by Sierra Club members, emphasizing the Club's and the Outings trip leader's historic role in getting people out-of-doors and spurring manufacturers to begin improving gear and clothing to make adventuring more accessible.

Advertisers in this issue, which includes the Backpacking & Camping Gear Buyer's Guide, will also have the opportunity to include a special mention congratulating Outings on 100 years of promoting outdoor recreation.

Sierra magazine reaches 1.3 million* of the country's most active and influential outdoor enthusiasts, offering advertisers one of the industry's largest circulations, and a very low rate of reader duplication with other outdoor magazines. Sierra is the first—and the last—place that readers look for the products and services that make their active, outdoor lifestyle possible.
