Malden Mills Employees Sue DuPont, Others

According to a December 9 report in Massachusetts' Eagle-Tribune, workers injured in the December 11, 1995, fire at Malden Mills have filed suit in Essex Superior Court in Lawrence, Mass., against several companies, including DuPont, which supplied material that fire inspectors have stated may have allegedly started the inferno.

DuPont supplied material that was turned into flock at Malden's Methune-based textile plant, and allegedly it was dust from this material that fire investigators say led to the blaze after being ignited by either an electrical switch or component in the plant. The DuPont-made material was thought to be resistant to explosion and fire, but investigators discovered that dust from the material could explode if it accumulated in the right concentration. OSHA also issued a warning after the fire when its investigation determined that the material could cause explosions.

The lawsuit, which was filed now to beat the three-year statute of limitations for filing personal injury claims, seeks unspecified damages against DuPont, Bayer Corp., Rhone-Poulenc Inc. and Novalis Fibres S.A.
