El Cajon, Calif.--With its building up for sale and sky-high California energy bills gobbling up its cash, Buck Knives is shopping for a new home.

Officials said the cities of Bend, Ore., and Post Falls, Idaho, have surfaced as possibilities as Buck Knives looks for

ways to cut costs.

"We're exploring the possibility of moving as part of an aggressive overall business plan," Buck Knives spokeswoman Veronica Toporek said Thursday. "If relocating will allow us to run a smarter business, then of course we would consider it."

She added that no move would occur for at least 18 months, and that the 100-year-old company may choose to stay put in Southern California after all. According to published reports, Buck Knives employs 250 at its factory near San Diego, Calif.

The legendary knife maker has struggled in recent years in the increasingly competitive cutlery market, losing large military contracts and cutting its staff by more than half in the past two decades. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 also hurt sales, Toporek said.

From sales of $48 million in 1995, Toporek said Buck Knives estimates that its 2002 revenues will be in the mid-$30 million range.
