Johannesburg, South Africa—World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) President Ernest Blom has issued a statement mourning the death last week of Edmund Goldstein, who served as WFDB president from 1986 to 1991.
Goldstein was born in pre-war Berlin and moved to Antwerp,
Belgium, during childhood, escaping to Britain in 1940. He then joined the army, serving as an interpreter, since he was fluent in German, French, Flemish and English.
He became a member of the London Diamond Club in 1941 and was elected to its committee in 1945. In 1967, he became president of the club, a post he held until 1994.
Under his leadership, the London Diamond Club thrived in both membership and worldwide prestige. It was Goldstein's vision that led to the merger with the London Diamond Bourse in 1994, establishing the London Diamond Bourse and Club. After two years as joint president, he became Honorary Life President.
Goldstein was first elected treasurer-general of the WFDB, prior to becoming president of the organization in 1986. He was declared Honorary Life President upon completion of his term.
His wife, Iris, his children and his grandchildren survive him.
