GIA's Shigley gets new role

Carlsbad, Calif.—Dr. James E. Shigley, director of research at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), has been given the new, broader role of GIA distinguished research fellow.

The GIA confirmed the move, announced in an internal memo that went out last week

from GIA Gem Laboratory head Tom Moses.

The memo states that Shigley will lead the research and educational efforts surrounding the Gubelin Collection. That includes writing related reports and research, allowing the public and trade to benefit from the collection and, in some cases, offering insight on gemological properties that have not been previously reported.

Shigley will also serve as research advisor, working with some of the identification and research staff. He will also be the main point of contact for GIA education to ensure the results are integrated into educational and outreach programs.
